Principles of Ethical Conduct: How to Live a Good Life?
Studymorning with Lama Jigme Namgyal
This series of monthly study mornings will start on Saturday, September 23 and will continue until the summer of 2024. The lectures can also be followed separately.
If you want to live a fulfilling and successful life, and especially if you want to go even deeper and discover the spiritual meaning of your life, make sure your behavior is in line with your highest aspirations. Buddhist teachings explain very clearly that you can only achieve happiness and success by following certain basic principles of ethical behavior. This is because you are always dealing with karma, or cause and effect: positive actions you do with your body, your speech and your mind are the causes of happiness, while negative actions will result in more suffering.
During these study mornings we examine the principles of ethical behavior as they apply to both our daily existence and our spiritual path. The text that serves as the basis for the cycle is Treatise on the Modes of Conduct by the extremely versatile Tibetan master Mipham Jamyang Namgyal Gyatso.
Mipham Rinpoche (1846-1912) was an influential philosopher and scholar of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. He wrote more than 32 volumes on subjects such as painting, poetics, sculpture, alchemy, medicine, logic, philosophy and tantra. He has always taken to heart Je Tsongkhapa’s famous advice that the teachings should be regarded primarily as practical guidance for life, and not merely as intellectual speculations. Mipham Rinpoche had a tremendous impact in reawakening a deep reverence and interest in the Nyingma teachings and Dzogchen. His contribution to the Rimé movement (ecumenical, non-sectarian) is invaluable.
Lama Jigmé Namgyal gives live teaching on this subject every month in our temple space in Rotterdam (except in the month of October*}. The lessons are based on an authentic Buddhist text, but are still current and of great importance. Participation in this study cycle is open to everyone, regardless of background, religion or experience.
