Wisdom: Consciousness & Awareness
Deepening Study Weekend with Lama Jigme Namgyal
This study weekend explores the Buddhist understanding of consciousness and how awareness can transform into wisdom. Lama Jigmé’s teachings help participants recognize the interdependence of mental states and develop a balanced view of life’s complexities.
Buddhist philosophy explains the eight realms of consciousness. They are a classification developed in the tradition of the Yogacara school of Buddhism. The eight areas of consciousness are the five senses supplemented by the mind, defilement’s of the mind and finally kunzi namshe. The latter is the ground consciousness, or storehouse of the mind, which is the basis for the other seven and therefore the basis for our emotions and thoughts, our happiness and suffering. Causes, conditions and inter-dependencies are necessary for things to appear in the mind; they do not appear without reason. To free ourselves from suffering, we must first understand the cause of our suffering. To understand the cause of suffering, we need to understand our mind and how the eight realms of consciousness are interconnected.
