Phowa – Study week

5 day studyweek with Lama Jigme Namgyal

NOTE: Due to the current lockdown in The Netherlands the temple is closed. You can now only participate online for this event if you have previously received the Phowa teachings from Lama Jigme.

This Phowa Week is intended for those who have attended the Phowa introduction Weekend, have received this teaching from Lama Jigmé before, or for committed students who have a background in Buddhism and meditation. Due to the depth of the teachings, to join this teaching online can only be done with Lama’s approval.

Phowa is an authentic, traditional, extraordinary Mahayana method or meditation practice to transform any negative emotion or any other mental disturbance. The practice of Phowa has extreme power and is a method that directly purifies perception. But it is not easy to understand it when you don’t have experience with the true nature of the mind or the Right View. Meditation with wisdom is Phowa, meaning an authentic pure transformation of perception.

Since we can die at any moment (nobody knows when this will be, nor can we avoid death) we need to practice now. We now have this great opportunity to learn and practice. It is of no importance what you believe or not. It is important to understand what the true nature of mind is. When we have trained enough during our lifetime, we will have enough experience to use it and to be successful in the transference when the time is right. Then only the body dies, and the mind will have many ways to attain true freedom, to be liberated from any suffering or fear.

At the time of death, our consciousness ordinarily leaves our body through one of the nine doors. Depending upon which of these nine doors our consciousness passes through, we are reborn in one of the six realms of existence. In order to stop being reborn in one of these six realms and continuing the endless round of birth and death, our consciousness must leave through the crown of the head. Traditionally, the crown is called the door of liberation.

The powerful practice of Phowa, or the transference of consciousness, enables you to transfer your consciousness to a pure perception at the time of death. Fear, panic or any mental negatives will be transformed by this method, though there are many levels of transference, depending on the level of the practitioner.

It is Lama Jigmé’s deepest wish to share these teachings with those who wish to receive them, and to benefit beings at the most important and most vulnerable moment of their lives, the moment of dying.
